Self-care is a crucial part of being healthy and happy. In this blog post, we are going to discuss 10 Self Care practices that can be done in the comfort of your home for little to no cost! It's not about how much money you spend but the feeling you get from practicing Self-Care and implementing it into your routine not just as something you do once after a long week but daily that it becomes a part of your personality and who you are. Self-care is any activity that makes you feel good, whether having a glass of wine and listening to your favorite music, reading a book, or taking a bubble bath. When we take care of ourselves first and foremost, we can show up for others in our lives as well.

The Importance of Self Care

Self-care is important for your mental and physical health. It helps you feel fulfilled and more confident, manages stress, improves sleeping patterns, and feel more connected with yourself.

Self-care practices can be as simple as taking a bath or going for a walk in nature. Many different self-care practices focus on the mind, body, or spirit.

The following 10 self-care practices at home will help you improve your overall well-being:

Schedule In Self-Care Time

Schedule self-care time. Self-care time is just as important as any other task you have to complete and can be just as easily forgotten or put off. Commit that you will schedule regular self-care rituals, just like any other commitment or appointment. Make it a priority. If you make these practices a high priority in your life, then they will become more important overall and help support all of your goals and priorities over time. In Forming Productive Routines 101 I discuss implementing habits that are effective for your personal growth and development. This coincides with incorporating self-care rituals into your daily routine, give yourself the chance to take a look at this blog post if you haven't had the chance already!

Self-Care & Self Love

Self-care and self-love are connected. While they might seem like separate things, both are just important as the other. The practice of loving yourself is all about your health, happiness, and well-being—and it's so important! Remember this, self-love centers around the thoughts and perception that we have of ourselves that develops into a personality that we exude to the outer world. Self-care is the actions that we do to take care of our physical, mental, and emotional health. If we don't show ourselves enough self-love then we won't find the importance of self-care because we are not valuing our personal health enough. We need to learn that our state of being inside and out is the most important before anyone else's. We have to take care of ourselves before we decide to take care of anyone else.

10 Self-Care Practices At Home

The following are some self-care practices that you can do at home for little to no cost but their value of them for your personal growth and self-love is priceless.

#1 Take a bath

Taking a hot bath is one of the best ways to relax and wind down after a long day. It’s easy to do, doesn’t require any special equipment, and will leave you feeling fresh and clean. You can use essential oils as well to help soothe your mind and body if you like.

#2 Meditation

Meditation is a great form of self-care. Whether you are meditating for fifteen minutes or an hour, that time that you give solely to yourself, cutting out any distractions and outside noises is like feeding the soul an amazing meal that is great for the body and heart. Meditating is a completely free activity yet so valuable!

#3 Pick Up A New Skill Or Hobby

Learn a new skill or hobby that brings you ease and enjoyment. Whether that is brushing up on your cooking skills, drawing or painting, gardening, or playing a sport.

#4 Light a Candle

Lighting a candle or incense is another form of self-care. We all know that feeling of lighting a candle and falling into a relaxed state, letting the candle burn for hours, and taking in the heavenly smell. Do this not only when you've just cleaned or decluttered your space but daily to continue enjoying that feeling.

#5 Watch Your Favorite Show or Movie

Watch your favorite show: I would recommend watching something that makes you laugh, feel good or that is insightful! Letting off steam with comedy or drama TV shows also allows us to decompress after working diligently throughout the week on our projects or jobs.

#6 Journaling

journal, graphic, canva

One of my favorite forms of self-care is Journaling. There is so much power in writing down anything that we may hold onto in our minds and releasing those emotions and words onto a piece of paper. Allowing yourself to just flow with words and motion of our pens that don't have to be spoken aloud but only for ourselves. I have even found myself growing an emotional connection to my journal because it holds so much value that is not measured by money but by the energy that you put into it.

#7 At Home Spa Day

Having an at-home spa day is a great way to not only take care of our inner being but our outer appearance as well. Finding at least one day of the week where you can do an extended version of your usual skincare routine, do your nails, or prepping your hair for the upcoming days. Set the mood with some candles, some background music, and a glass of wine while you apply your favorite face mask or exfoliate your skin in a hot shower can be such a comforting and enjoyable feeling. You will finish leaving revitalized, refreshed, and loving the way you feel and smell.

#8 Take A Day Completely To Yourself

At times we can get so caught up in our work, projects, tasks, and anything else we are trying to accomplish or get done. We want to stay consistent in our efforts and put in the work needed but it is okay for us to retract just a bit and take a day completely to ourselves. If taking a day completely to yourself is not doable at least a few hours were committed to relaxing and refreshing ourselves to show up for the next week the way we intend to. This can be laying in bed a little longer than usual or just doing whatever you feel like on that day which can be nothing significant at all!

#9 Make A Step Towards A Goal

Setting aside the time to make a step towards a goal or crossing something off your checklist that you have been wanting to get done can feel very gratifying. For example, reaching out to someone that you've been wanting to do even if it is a 5 minute "How are you?" phone conversation, going through mail or emails that you want to delete from your inbox, decluttering a space, or moving something around in your space to have a better flow. Taking that one step can truly change your day and mood.

#10 Look In The Mirror

Take the time to look in the mirror at yourself and say something positive and affirming. Have you ever stopped to look in the mirror and just ask yourself "How are you feeling?" We often ask everyone else how are they doing before we ask ourselves. Reflect on your emotions, reality, and relationships to see what areas may need some improvement.

If you take away anything from this post, let it be that self-care is a continuous practice. Even when we reach that point and say to ourselves, I don't need to do this as much anymore, I'm good. Keep going, It’s about being present and mindful of your body, mind, and soul so that you can show up for yourself and be that elevated version of yourself that you wish to become.
